Alix Pierre, winner of the EMPL Invitational Art Show, showcases over 20 pieces of work this January in an EMPL exhibit.

Alix Pierre, winner of the East Meadow Invitational Art Show, was honored on Friday evening during the opening reception of his art show at the . The diverse range of Pierre's work captivated those in attendance.

"It's very colorful and very tranquil at the same time," said Donna Campisi while looking at his landscape oil paintings.

Originally from Haiti, Pierre moved to the United States in 1983. Much of Alix's work is inspired by his Haitian roots. However, his styles are far-ranging, from realistic depictions to dream-like fantasies to modern pieces as well.

Jude Schanzer, director of public relations and programming at EMPL, recalls meeting Pierre in her office for the first time.

"He just came in with a bunch of paintings and we were really amazed," Schanzer said. "His work is incredibly masterful. I was amazed by his proficiency in so many different styles."

Pierre's collection at the EMPL truly represents his unique and eclectic style. Using mediums like oil, tempera, acrylic, pencil and charcoal, the pieces include architectural sketches, vibrant landscapes, surreal dreamscapes and everything in between.           

Schanzer encouraged Pierre to enter his work in EMPL's Invitational Art Show. Not only did he enter it, but he won, in two different categories.

Schanzer said they received over 70 pieces of artwork that year. They are judged in five different categories: oils and pastels, watercolors, graphic art, mixed media and sculpture. Additionally, there is an overall winner for Best in Show.

The contest is reviewed objectively by non-East Meadow affiliated judges, including professional artists, museum curators and art directors. Pierre took first place in the oils and pastels category with his painting, "Romantic Atmosphere." He also took the award for Best in Show with his other painting, "Mother Nature." (Both are on display in his collection at the EMPL.)

Pierre, who now resides in East Meadow, said the collection represents work from 1983 through present day.

"What happens is I perfected them over the years," said Pierre when describing his process. "I'm constantly refining them because I'm never satisfied. So, maybe, two years ago they may not have looked the same as they look today."

Pierre said he's gotten to a point with his work that he wants to get it out there, but admits it's very hard to let go. Pierre said that after 20 years of creating and refining, "they have become a part of me."

Pierre was honored by the turnout at his opening reception, especially with the threat of snow.

"This will empower me triple to do further work," said Pierre during his reception speech. "And, hopefully, I can do another show."

The art of Alix Pierre will be on exhibit and can be viewed downstairs at the East Meadow Public Library throughout the month of January.
